We Are Called To Remember
What are some historical Memorials you have seen that have great meaning to you and why? What was the purpose for the Memorial being made? Are they still significant today to our mass culture? and if not why not?
The Elbe River runs through parts of the Czech Republic and Germany and like so many of our rivers has its full times and even times when it seems to be very low and dry. in the lowest points of the river bed lie what the locals know as Hungersteine. these are boulders that have dates and messages carved into them dating as far back as the 1400’s. The are memorials and warnings to the future generations of the drought and difficulty coming because of the lack of water that has revealed the stones. Dozens of these hunger stones appeared again in 2018.
Throughout time we have been given and made different memorials for us not to forget our past, what lies before us in our present time, as well of what we look forward to in the future. God has laid out several of these memorials for His people to remember Him and the covenants made between Him and his people.
What are some of the memorials/covenants you can think of that God has given or made?
Read Joshua 4:1-9
In Joshua 4 God has the people pick out stones from the Jordan for what purpose? Why is it so important for us to remember our past and what God has done? Why pass it on to future generations?
Just like the Hunger Stones in the Elbe River we have a great memorial of tragedy but also a testament of survival in the taking of our communion. The difference is in that when we take time each week to remember the incredible suffering and sacrifice of Jesus for our sins it also brings us assurance and hope of our future. This memorial is is one we can lean on in times of struggles and doubt of our worth.
Read the following Mark 14:22-26 Acts 2:42; Acts 20:7
When we honor Christ with this memorial what are some of the things it means to you? Why do you think Christ called us to do this weekly and together?
How would you explain and teach someone about what communion is and why it is such an important part of your christian walk?
